Why were sanctions imposed on President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov?

Kathmandu. Western nations have ordered personal sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Both have had their assets confiscated in the United States, the European Union and Canada, and have been barred from traveling to the United States.

The announcement came two days after Russia launched an offensive in neighboring Ukraine. Earlier in the day, the European Union (EU) had taken similar action against the presidents of Syria and Belarus.

The United States has said no such action was taken against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
